Golden Globe Review – Blonde Style

January 19, 2010

This passed Sunday saw the Golden Globes air. We, like most celeb watchers had a few things to say about the fashion (does anyone really care who won best movie?;p) and hair. We all know that the Globes are often a pre-cursor for things to come: the Oscars, prom season… So what did the celebs forecast for these future events?

First off, there was finally a return to “done hair”. The majority of celebs opted for hair up or half down, pulled off of the face. What does this mean to us? For many ladies this is great news. Not all of us have manes of hair that look spectacular all night when worn down. Maybe it was the rain that made celebs and their stylists chose to go with off the face buns like Maggie Gylenhaall, Chloe Sevigny, Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz.

Our favorite up-swept styles were Jane Krakowski’s (of 30 Rock) loosely pinned curls and Sandra Bullock’s asymmetrical upsweep with loose tendrils cascading down one shoulder. Plus, we have to give an honorable mention to Diane Kruger for her half up and wavy look.

Not to criticize, but the usual suspects to go with the down and wavy look – Jennifer Anniston, Fergie and Julia Roberts. We’re still left with the vision of last year where, Miss Diaz sported one of her not-so-good looks: stringy, thin looking hair and grown out highlights, that topped off a pink Chanel Couture dress.  A stunning dress, yet her whole look seemed undone because of the hairstyle.

Okay, back to this year. Let’s talk dresses! Variations of violet rocked the red carpet Sunday, as did the one shoulder look and the ever-popular strapless number. The violet ladies included: Fergie; Jane Krakowski; Sandra Bullock’s (best actress winner in a drama for The Blind Side) Strapless Bottega Venetta number; Leona Lewis Strapless Satin Roberto Cavalli and who could forget Diane Kruger in a one-shouldered Christian LaCroix!

Pastel pinks, corals, pale grays and nudes were popular dress colors too, as seen on Emily Blunt and Maggie Gylenhaall, Jennifer Garner and Nicole Kidman.

A couple of the most fashion forward looks had to be Kate Hudson in a structured white crepe Marchesa gown and January Jones of Madmen who also donned a very sculpted, fitted structured satin dress from Lanvin and dressed up a simple upsweep look with a black stain headband. Her red lips and nails were standout in the otherwise subtle, natural make up looks of the night.

We can not end our wrap-up without the mention of accessories. These Golden Globes saw a return to classic. Gone are the exotic statement pieces of dark gemstones. Everyone was in diamonds, lots of borrowed diamonds.

So when is your “Golden Globe” formal occasion? And which look will you take out on the town with you?
